We are talking about Sabyasachi Mukherjee who is India’s top fashion designer and recently celebrated 25 years in the fashion world. His journey from struggling with depression to creating a multi-million-dollar brand is inspiring for all. Sabyasachi Mukherjee faced financial difficulties while growing up as his father was a refugee from Bangladesh. His father lost his job when the demand for jute dropped and suddenly the rise of plastic over the industry. Well, these hardships had an impact on Mukherjee and came a point in his life where he wanted to end his life. He managed to overcome these struggles and turned his pain and agony into a source of inspiration for creativity. During the India Today Conclave East 2017, Mukherjee spoke about moving from his small hometown of Chandannagar to Kolkata. He also said that he was depressed and faced challenges and revealed that his tough time helped him gain clarity. He even said that if he had not struggled with depression, he might have ended up working for a company like Google in San Francisco rather than creating his name in the fashion industry. In 2017 he said, ‘I was depressed, and I tried to kill myself. I was unconscious, and my mom gave me a slap… Depression is as common as common cold. If you’re not depressed, you’re not normal. My depression gave me a lot of clarity.’

Sabyasachi’s business was generating an estimated Rs 275 crore in revenue and this year it has grown to Rs 500 crore, according to The Week. He said, ‘The dream is to become a $2 billion (over ₹17,000 crore at present rate) brand by 2030. That’s a billion with a B. And I am being conservative’.
