“Naam mein kya rakha hai?” Well, ask this question to the makers of these nine films and you’ll surely get an answer! A lot of money is riding on films but it is always a gamble! On every Friday, a film’s fate is declared. Either it marches on its way to success or it is bound to doom. Thus, the filmmakers take enough time to get the project right. But here’s something interesting. Here’s about a film title that became the ‘unluckiest’ element for almost nine films.
Three major movies with the same film title received the same fate and not so pleasant one! The word was also a part of other film titles and all the films did not do well at the box office.
All about Karz
It is Karz. Subhash Ghai’s movie Karz that released in 1980 starred Rishi Kapoor, Tina Ambani, Simi Garewal and many others in pivotal roles. The movie is now considered to be a cult classic. It had many hit songs like Om Shanti Om, Ek Hasina Thi, Paisa Yeh Paisa that are still remembered. On IMDb, it has a 7.4 rating. But upon its release, the movie turned out to be a box office dud. It reportedly earned only Rs 4 crore at the box office despite big names. Rishi Kapoor, in his autobiography, did write about the film’s failure and mentioned that he felt depressed; unsure of his career as an actor.
Later came Karz: The Burden of Truth starring Sunny Deol, Shilpa Shetty and Suniel Shetty. The movie reportedly made only Rs 15 crore at the box office and was a flop.
Then came the infamous Karzzzz starring Himesh Reshammiya and Urmila Matondkar in 2008. It was the remake of the original Karz starring Rishi Kapoor. The movie did not receive critical or commercial acclaim. If the reports are to be believed, the makers of the film were on the verge of bankruptcy. Urmila Matondkar’s career did take a hit post the film and she moved on to judging TV shows.
Not just these three films, the ‘unluckiest’ word was also a part of titles like – Karz Tere Khoon Ka (1988), Doodh Ka Karz (1990), Pyar Ka Karz (1990), Karz Chukana Hai (1991), Mahaan Karz (1991), and Doodh Ka Karz (2016). All these films weren’t major box office successes. Will any filmmaker dare to use it again?
