Are the Emmys finally going to catch wind(s) of this show? In 2024, Dark Winds producer George R. R. Martin declared in a blog post that it is “past time” for Zahn McClarnon to win an Emmy. (The Game of Thrones author has not been afraid to take a post back before, so we know he’s standing by this opinion with his full chest.) When asked about Martin’s shoutout at Sundance 2025, the cast of the AMC show made their agreement clear with some collective “yeahhh”s and claps. “We all feel that,” Jessica Matten told Vulture, while McClarnon smiled and added, “That would be wonderful. I’d be honored.”

Still, awards are not the only type of recognition that matters to the cast. Native directors, producers, writers, and crew members work on the show. And Matten appreciates that strangers come up to cast members and talk about how they feel about Dark Winds. “It just feels like it’s an opportunity for other tribes to say, hey, what’s up, our family watches it, it means a lot,” she said. “So it’s just like, on a very human level, a chance to connect with another soul too. It’s very celebratory.” Adapated from the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman, the show is a psychological thriller follows Navajo tribal police officers. McClarnon said he loves that Native kids get to see people like themselves on television. “I feel honored to be a part of that,” he said. “My long career, in the last 35 years, it’s finally come to fruition where we’re telling our own stories. And that’s very important.”

We’re back at Sundance in the Vulture Spot, where we’re interviewing the casts and creators of the year’s buzziest films. Check out the rest of our coverage from the film fest here.
