Adele Lim is set to collaborate with Disney again as the director of the third installment. Disney introduced The Princess Diaries in 2001, which launched Anne Hathaway into stardom. A sequel, The Princess Diaries : Royal Engagement, followed in 2004. Both films featured Julie Andrews and were directed by the late Garry Marshall, collectively earning $300 million worldwide.
The first film centers on Hathaway’s character, Mia Thermopolis, who discovers she is the heir to the throne of Genovia. Along the way, she brings her friends Lilly and Michael Moscovitz as she navigates the challenges of being a teenager. Lim expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life.
We look forward to celebrating its core themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.” Lim has an impressive background, having worked as a writer-producer on shows like One Tree Hill and Lethal Weapon, and she was also the co-showrunner for the CW series Star-Crossed.
She is the writer behind Warner Bros.’ hit rom-com Crazy Rich Asians, directed by Jon Chu, which earned $174 million at the box office in the U.S. and received nominations for Best Picture at both the Golden Globes and the Producers Guild Awards, along with winning the Critics Choice Award. Last year, Lim teamed up with Naia Cucukov to establish the production company 100 Tigers. Cucukov, a former senior executive at Walden Media, has credits that include the Netflix series The Baby-Sitters Club and Manhunt.
The company aims to “foster and empower artists and projects that share our passion for female-forward, cross-cultural stories with global appeal and a glossy edge.” 100 Tigers is currently developing several projects with various studios, including Amazon/MGM, HBO Max, and ABC. Lim is represented by Paradigm and Ginsburg, Daniels, Kallis.
Chase is represented by CAA and Del Shaw Moonves. Cucukov is represented by Paradigm and Sean Marks. Stack is represented by CAA and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment. Greeson is represented by Kaplan/Perrone and UTA.
