ROCHESTER, NY — July 22, 2025. Chuck Mangione, the cherished Grammy-winning flugelhorn and trumpet maestro known for the smooth jazz hit “Feels So Good,” passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Rochester at the age of 84. His family shared the news, mentioning that he had stepped back from performing in 2015.

Born Charles Frank Mangione on November 29, 1940, in Rochester, he was surrounded by jazz from a young age—often enjoying meals with legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey. He kicked off his professional career playing in a band with his brother Gap and later honed his skills at the Eastman School of Music. Mangione eventually returned to his alma mater to teach and lead its jazz ensemble, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.

The highlight of his solo career came in the late 1970s with the hit album Feels So Good. The title track climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a staple on smooth-jazz radio. Mangione snagged two Grammy Awards—first for “Bellavia” in 1977 and then for the Children of Sanchez soundtrack in 1979—among more than a dozen nominations.

He also made a memorable mark in mainstream pop culture by voicing himself on the animated sitcom King of the Hill, where he played a spokesperson for Mega Lo Mart. His recurring role brought joy to fans who recognized him as the talent behind the show’s jingles and scores.

Additionally, he composed iconic pieces for international sporting events: “Chase the Clouds Away” was the theme for the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and “Give It All You Got” was performed during the closing ceremony of the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid.

Mangione made a significant impact not just in music but also in education and outreach. Over his impressive six-decade career, he released more than 30 albums, signed memorabilia for institutions like the Smithsonian, and earned a spot in the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in 2012. His family and fans fondly remember him for his vibrant energy and kindness—often sticking around after performances to sign autographs and engage with his audience.

His legacy continues to thrive, not only through his timeless instrumentals and holiday playlists but also in the inspiration he sparked in aspiring musicians all around the globe.
