Y’know, the X-Men really get all the credit as the “queer allegory” superheroes, and while those mutants are definitely gay, we should put some respect on the Fantastic Four, too. In the trailer for Marvel’s upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the overarching emphasis is that these four are a chosen family, word to Vin Diesel. “We make a point to do a family dinner every week,” Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards says in one of the very first lines, like he’s Blanca on Pose. Then, the trailer ends on Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm emotionally intoning that they will face the world “as a family.” Furthermore, a grouping of three guys where one’s a bear, one’s Daddy, and one’s a hotheaded twink is a classic gay friendship. We bet Sue Storm gets so mad when the others leave her to visit Fire Island.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps also stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm. The movie is slated to come out (ha!) on July 25. But if Marvel’s smart, it’ll walk that release date back one month.
