It’s a pretty television-heavy week, especially for fans of dad TV (not just for actual dads). Suits LA, Reacher, and 1923 are all for those yearning to flip through the cable channels, even if a majority of those shows are strictly on streaming. There’s a killer monkey going loose in theaters, and Kristen Bell is hosting the SAG Awards, which may or may not shake up your Oscar predications. It’s not a totally dull weekend.
Oz Perkins and Neon are shaping up to be a good pair. The filmmaker is following up last year’s hit Longlegs by taking a stab at Stephen King’s short story The Monkey. Like the book, this horror revolves around a toy monkey who brings death and chaos to those near it in a Final Destination–esque fashion. Theo James stars as twin brothers Hal and Bill, who reconnect to destroy the toy — though, of course, this is an Oz Perkins film, so expect some gnarly, unsettling kills along the way.
Suits experienced the Netflix bump two years ago, so naturally, a spinoff was ordered. Suits creator Aaron Korsh is back helming this new legal drama with Gabriel Macht returning for a short arc, as the series moves to its namesake city. Meghan Markle probably won’t make a cameo, but hey, one can hope.
The sun never sets on Taylor Sheridan’s vast television empire. Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford return for 1923’s second (and final) season, where they play the hardened Dutton matriarch and patriarch who run their cattle ranch in an unforgiving climate. Something tells us they will prevail, and that “something” is the fact that the land is still in the hands of the Dutton family in Yellowstone, a series that takes place a century later. —Tolly Wright
It’s Netflix’s second year of streaming the SAG Awards on its platform, with Kristen Bell hosting this year, and these awards have probably taken the Golden Globes’ crown as the most entertaining awards show to watch celebs get drunk and have fun.
(Streaming on Netflix February 23 at 8 p.m. ET.)
➽ If you want to judge the red-carpet looks, there’s also the Official SAG Awards Pre-Show on Netflix, which streams at 7 p.m. ET.
Oh, yeah, this big guy’s back too. Maybe you’re a fan — its first two seasons were a ratings powerhouse for Prime Video. Enjoy.
Adding to a mini-trend of shows focused on drama surrounding the presidency (Paradise, The Residence), this limited thriller series stars Robert De Niro as a former president who, after a cyberattack destabilizes the nation’s tech infrastructure, leads the commission tasked with finding who’s responsible. The ensemble cast includes Lizzy Caplan, Angela Bassett, and Jesse Plemons. — Roxana Hadadi
Steven Knight whiffed with last year’s exhausting The Veil, but he’s more in his bag with this 1880s period piece. It throws together unlikely figures (a Jamaican immigrant, the leader of an all-female crime gang, and an infamous boxer) and tracks their feuds, affairs, and power struggles. Expect lots of slow-motion blood splatter. — R.H.
Comedian and Saturday Night Live writer Rosebud Baker’s new special is the next in the small but growing collection of comedy specials recorded by comedians during their pregnancies. Baker’s striking innovation is to have taped the special both before and after giving birth. — Kathryn VanArendonk
The last time Nosferatu visited a place, he cast a plague upon it. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen to Peacock. Robert Eggers’s gothic remake is coming to the streamer after a bewitching theatrical run. Enjoy it in the comfort of your own coffins now, sickos.
➽ Plus, you can spend your 15-minute intermission making your own popcorn since The Brutalist is on VOD; so is Companion.
