Scott Hamilton may glide effortlessly on ice, but when it comes to the dance floor? That’s a whole different ballgame. The 67-year-old former figure skater has turned down the chance to compete on Dancing with the Stars more than once.
“I’ve said no nine times,” the two-time Olympian shared exclusively with Parade. He mentioned that Deena Katz, a talent coordinator and one of the main producers of the show, has reached out to him multiple times, always being “so kind” in her invitations. But Hamilton candidly admitted, “the biggest issue is that I can’t dance.”
When reminded that many contestants pick up dancing skills on the ABC competition, Hamilton quipped, “I know, but I also like to win.”
In addition to his time on DWTS, the Olympian has turned down several offers to have his life story turned into a biopic. “I said no three times,” Hamilton shared.
However, there’s one offer that’s “still on the table.”
“I’m a bit hesitant because, honestly, I don’t want to lay everything bare,” the founder of the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation chuckled. “I think I’ll just keep some of that stuff to myself. But hey, we’re all a bit goofy. We just have to figure things out.”
If he were to go for it, it would be with the current group he’s working with. “But… what’s the ending? What’s the payoff?” he pondered, recognizing, “It’s still being written. So, we’ll see.”
When asked who he’d want to portray him in a biopic, he quipped, “Probably Brad Pitt, but he’s getting up there in age, so I might need to rethink that.” He continued with a laugh, “Honestly, it would be fitting if it were someone completely unknown. There’s no way I should be the subject of a biopic.” Once a name that few recognized, Hamilton has now carved out a legacy as an ice skating icon.
He clinched four consecutive US titles, dominated four World Championships, and proudly took home the gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics. This month, he’s heading to Italy for the XXV Winter Olympic Games, marking his 10th Olympics as a broadcaster.
While he once chased gold as a competitor, these days, Hamilton’s focus has shifted to his family. He and his wife, Tracie, are proud parents to four kids: Maxx, Aidan, Jean Paul, and Evelyne.
“I just want my kids to be healthy, happy, and thriving. It’s no longer about me; it’s all about them. Every day, I’m learning how to be a better parent and husband. I love to celebrate my wins, but each day feels like a new challenge—‘Alright, I need to improve here, here, and here,’” Hamilton shared. “I adore my family, and I’d do anything for them. Anything.”
Right now, keeping up with his wife and kids is his top priority. “As for all the professional stuff, sure, it’s important,” Hamilton said. “I need to stay committed and grateful for those opportunities, but ultimately, the only legacy I have is in my children. I want to make sure I get that right.”
